June 2009 review's

Hook, Line and Sinker - Dallas, Texas ( uptown )

Very Good!

This place is the best of the Fried Shrimp, Fried Fish, basket type seafood place. It's very busy almost any day of the week, so I recommend that you get there early ( 11am for lunch - 5pm for dinner ). I recommend the spicy Mexican Shrimp cocktail which is probably the best I've had. Fried Shrimp and fish are very good. I also like the lemonade. Outdoor seating also available. It's a dive, so dress is very casual.

Best Burger in DFW

RG's Burger and Grill - Denton, Texas

EXCELLENT!

This is my new #1 Burger in Dallas/Fort Worth area. This is a MUST try place. The only thing I would recommend different, is toast the bun. Other than that, this place is a "10". The Prices are very reasonable. Burger's are between $5-8 but it comes with "unlimited" fries ( and they are great by the way ). They also have a 4x meat burger for $15, just in case you want to induce a colon suicide.

Afterwards, head up to Beth Marie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream & Soda Fountain for Homemade Ice Cream.

They also sell Hot Dogs too. I'll review the hot dog on my next visit.

Might be a drive to Denton, but it's worth it.

JD's Top Burger List
  1. RG's Burger and Grill
  2. Kincaid's - Fort Worth Location
  3. Twisted Root - Deep Ellum
  4. Kelly's Eastside

April 2009 Restaurant Review

Mia's

Excellent!

This is probably the BEST Mexican food in Dallas/Fort Worth. I like Herrara's, Ojeda's, El Norte, Chuy's, Pappasitos, but Mia's is better than all of them. I had "Butch's Original Brisket taco's" and it was awesome. Desiree had the Brisket Enchilada's. We also ordered the Queso Chorizo, which the waiter mixed it at the table and rolled some into flour tortilla's. This place has some good food. My only complaint would be they serve can soft drinks. I much prefer the unlimited refill softdrinks plan. Anyway, I highly recommend this place.

Grimaldi's Pizza - Allen Location

This place came highly recommended so we decide to try it out. I thought the Pizza was "ok". The cheese and toppings are fresh, crust is thin like NY style. We got a 16" Pepperoni and Sausage pie and shared the house salad. Both were decent but not GREAT. Now for my complaint; the service SUCKED! The waitress took our order and never returned. The salad and Pizza came out together and she never refilled our drinks. I also noticed other tables got complimentary bread and we didn't. I complained to the Manager and got $10 off, plus a piece of Cheese Cake out of it. Louie's pizza is TOPs for me and I wouldn't put this place in my top 5 in Dallas.

Blue Mesa - Frisco for Sunday Brunch

We ate here with The Pennington's on Easter Sunday. Food was good. I would reference this place with the "Southwest Airlines" cattle call method of feeding. Buffet is Huge with Omlette, Hevos Ranchero's, eggs benedict bar, tons of other stuff including fruit and desserts. Service was good and food was good. Very crowded and I felt "hurried" to finish up.

Jeff Dawson restaurant review site

OK, since I started this site eating out is all I've written about, so I figured I'd just keep to the theme and just report on or Blog about places we eat at and what my review of the place is...

Kelly's Eastside, Plano Texas

VERY GOOD!

This place is a nice little find. Was rated high and DMNews "best of", so we tried the burgers and Jackson had the kids chicken strips. I will say, this place has a good burger. It's the kind that is bbq'd over a wood grill, Keiser bun, and fresh vegatables. So if you looking for a very good backyard kind of burger with a good helping of fresh cut fries, this place is it. I plan to go back and try the Brisket queso, BBQ Club, or one of the other sandwiches. One thing to note, this place is 1/2 bar, so they cater to the adult crowd much more than kids. Best to go for lunch on weekends with kids.

Frilly's Cajun Seafood, Denton Texas

Very good!

Another nice find but it's in Denton. Crawfish combo is great. I also recommend the fried shrimp. Everything is very good and prices are around $10 for lunch and $17 for dinner. If you're in downtown area of Denton this is a good place to eat at.

Mamma's Pizza, Plano Texas

Excellent!

If you're looking for buffet pizza, this is the best there is. $18 for Desiree, Me and Jackson... so it's cheap too. small ole fashion pizza parlour with fresh salad bar with all the traditional's. Pizza is hot a fresh and they use REAL Mozzerella cheese. Been around for 30+ years.

Mamma's Daughter, Irving Blvd Dallas, Texas

Good!

I thought is was very good. Poor Richard's is still my Dallas favorite for Breakfast. Everything was good though and clean little cafe with nice old lady waitress. We plan to try a different location that's closer to us, so i'll report back after we've tried it. Went there for Breakfast. This place has your traditional Breakfast food. Egg's, Biscuits, sausage, bacon, pancake's, gravy, etc...

New Years Resolutions

The year has started out with a visit to the Nutrionist. Guess what? She put me on a Diet. This time it seems like it's reasonable because she's letting me eat and drink what I want, but controlling the amount of Carbs on a daily basis. I figured I give it a try and see what happens.

This diet is all about Carb control. 1 Carb is equal to 15 grams. Also, you have to eat all the meals and snacks. Skipping meals/snacks will only mess up the diet.

Here's the Diet:

Breakfast ( 7:30-8am )
3 Carbs ( 3 x 15 = 45 grams )
0 Proteins
1 Fat

Lunch ( 11am )
4 Carbs ( 60 grams )
Unlimited Non Starchy vegetables
3-4 oz Protein
2 Fat

Snack ( 3 pm )
2 Carbs ( 30 grams )

Dinner ( 6pm )
4 Carbs ( 60 grams )
Unlimited Non Starchy vegetables
3-4 oz Protein
2 Fat

Snack ( 9pm )
3 carbs ( 45 grams )

I've never been one to read labels, but if you simply go to the Carbohydrate section on the box or can and read, it tells you the serving size and the amount of carbs listed by "gram".

As an aid, you can go to Calorieking.com and it will tell you what Carb grams are in "fast food" restaurant menu's. We eat out so much that this is a key site to make sure I stay consistant.

Funny thing is.. Fried Chicken is one of the lowest "carb" foods that you can eat at Fast Food. Me loves me some fried Chicken!

We'll see how this goes. I'm going to make an effort and see if it works...

later.

Best of.... Places to eat in Texas

I've lived all over Texas: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Nacogdoches, Alice, and Atlanta. In 41 years, I've had the pleasure of eating at many places around the state and I thought I would post here on a few of my favorites. If you ever get a chance to experience any of these I'm sure you will agree that they are outstanding.

South Texas:

Kings Inn tops the list as the VERY best Seafood restaurant and my most favorite. Biggest fried Shrimp, Best Fried Salt water fish, Onion Rings, Avacado Salad, and the Worlds greatest Tartar Sauce. If you are ever near Corpus Christi, this is a MUST stop. It's been around for 80+ years and family run place.

If you like mexican sweet bread, cookies, doughnuts, etc. this place is it. They also happen to have the best Breakfast Taco's going. Flour Tortilla's are fresh and Hot sauce is damn good too.

The original Butcher paper BBQ place. It's been around for 40+ years.

East Texas Area:

This is the best catfish around! Period! It's in the middle of no-where, but it's damn good.

Probably the best hamburgers in Texas. It's a true dive, but if you're looking for a burger, fries, and a chocolate shake, this place cannot be beat.

One of my all time favorites. Very Good Fried Shrimp, Coleslaw, and best Hushpuppies. A must stop if you are heading to Caddo Lake.
Mexican food is decent, but the marg's will knock you on your ass. Great Fajita's!
While attending SFA, this place was a main staple in my diet. Very good Bacon Cheeseburgers and homemade fries. Worth a stop if you're ever in Nac-a-nowhere.
In my opinion, this is in the top 3 best BBQ joints in Texas. Brisket, Sausage, it's all good here.

Austin Area:

Best Chili Dog in Texas. My fraternity brother, Brendan, works as a bartender here. Brendan has a very strong pour if you looking for a stiff drink too.

One of the top 3 best burgers in Texas. I love this greasy spoon. They also make a homemade Limeade, which is a must.

When I lived in Austin, my roommate, Pete and I used to hit this place every Saturday morning before our round of Disk golf. Great Breakfast Taco's!

Some like, some don't... I think this place is the epitome of TEXMEX. Good Margarita's too.

If you want a true Margarita on the rocks, ask for a Silver Train. Good Mexican food and stiff drinks. Very Popular local hangout.

Not the best BBQ, but it's good and it's all you can eat. I like this place because of what it is, BYOB, and it's Texas Nostalgia at it's finest.

This location has some good BBQ! Not all Rudy's are created the same, but the Round Rock locale is Muy Bueno~ Ask for the Moist Brisket and Spicy Chopped Beef.

Houston Area:

Dallas Area: ( see previous post )
